----- HER STORY -----
My mother, who lives in Japan, began to have hip arthritis when she was around 68. All her doctors said "it is just the age. There is nothing you can do but to undergo surgery" and gave her no other advise. They offered her no guidance on how to protect her body while weakening, or how she should prepare for optimal surgery. The idea of going under a knife made her so scared, she declined the surgery and continued to deteriorate. With time, her condition only worstened. By the time she turned 70, she could not walk properly. Her spine was twisted and she couldn't properly lift her feet. She was practically dragging herself along. I live in Australia and she refused to use the internet, so it took me a while to see what was really going on. When I saw her and looked at her diet and exercise regime, which was practically non-existent, I was horrified. She was deeply addicted to sugar and all sorts of inflammatory foods that were wreaking havoc on her digestive system . Her legs were stick thin while her belly was bloated like a balloon.
For her 70th, I invited her to stay with me and basically gave her one month of hard love. She had no access to sugar or junk food. She had to eat my home made meals which had loads of colourful vegetables, engaged in a variety of exercise daily, received massages, singing lessons and regular physiotherapy treatments. Her diaphragm and breathing coordination was so weak she could not even project sound. She absolutely loathed everything initially, but one month later, she could walk, looked 10 years younger and the finally saw for herself the benefits of exercise. "No one ever told me to exercise!" she exclaimed. She went back home but I no longer needed to tell her to move - she did all herself.
3 years later in 2018, she was ready to undergo surgery. She replaced both hips in one go and recovered very well. She was fit enough physically and mentally to start a new chapter in her life.
Around the same time, I began to study first year level anatomy and physiology at University of New England and Victoria University. Partly because I wanted to ensure her recovery from long distance - The more knowledge I have, the better guidance I can give. In addition, I utilised the ongoing covid lockdown to obtain personal training licenses in 2021. I immediately started to help people in need straight after I obtained my full qualifications.
My mom is now 77, eats well and is stronger than when she was in her mid 60s. She does not live in fear and paranoia anymore. her self-trust and belief in herself completely changed when she regained her strength. I would love to share this realization with you as well.
